Considering taking the 10,000 Steps Challenge Walk on Saturday June 6th?

Registration is free. It just involves signing in and picking up a passport (which includes a map of the entire route) either at Station #1 at the Plant Recreation Centre , Somerset and Preston Streets, or at any other station which might provide a more convenient starting point for some walkers (check the route map elsewhere on this site for the station nearest you).

Between 9:30 and 11:30 am a route through historic Hintonbug and Dalhousie (including Little Italy and ChinaTown) with 12 stations along the route will be set up. The length of the route will highlight the number of steps people are advised to walk everyday for healthy hearts. The route along sidewalks and the O-Train Pathway is baby stroller friendly, and can be shortened to accommodate individual needs.

At each station along the route walkers can a) get their passport stamped; b) check the directions to the next station; c) learn more about the organization volunteering to run the station.

When walkers have completed their walk they are invited to finish at the Plant Recreation Centre and present their passport for free food and door prizes.

There will also be other free events ongoing at Plant Recreation Centre during the day. A Basketball Hoops Competition will take place at the court from 11 am to 3 pm with age groups from 10 years and up. Free demonstrations by Centre staff and a free swim round out a day of celebrations for National Health and Fitness Day. Show your support for active lifestyles for health by joining our celebration on Saturday June 6th.

The 10,000-Step Challenge

Saturday, June 7, 2014

image walks

Celebrate the Plant Pool 10th Anniversary by walking your way to fitness.

Health experts recommend walking 10,000 steps every day for optimum heart health, but how far is 10,000 steps and how long does it take to walk that distance?  Put on your walking shoes, grab a water bottle, invite a friend, and we will show you.

Our multigenerational neighbourhood walk celebrates a decade of accessible, community-focused recreation by encouraging you to have fun and get moving.

Registration will open at 11:30 am (or online in early May).

The official opening kicks off at noon with greetings from federal, provincial and municipal officials.  A group warm-up following the opening will get walkers ready to go.

For each 1000 steps walked, participants get a raffle ticket; the more you walk, the better your chances of winning a great prize.

After the walk, participants are invited to enjoy a picnic of healthy snacks and to watch a variety of fitness and recreation demonstrations. And the cost for all this? Absolutely nothing but a smile and some energy!

The 10,000-Step Challenge is organized by the Plant Pool Recreation Association in conjunction with our community partners including the Hintonburg Recreation Association, Somerset West Community Health Centre, the Plant Recreation Centre, and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario.

PPRA issues fitness challenge

Quote Posted on Updated on

The Plant Pool Recreation Association (PPRA) wants you to walk your way to fitness, starting with its 10,000-Steps Challenge on Saturday, June 7.

“We have two goals for the Challenge,” explains Martha Musgrove, co-president of the PPRA. “We want to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the reopening of the Plant Recreation Centre, and we want to encourage residents of our neighbourhoods to get active by walking the 10,000 steps recommended by experts as a daily exercise promoting optimum health.”

The 10,000-Steps Challenge will be a true community effort because the PPRA is partnering with the Hintonburg Recreation Association, the Plant Recreation Centre, and the Somerset West Community Health Centre to organize the event.

On the day of the Challenge, participants will be given a passport at registration and sent out on a marked route, starting at the Plant Recreation Centre. Passport monitoring stations will be set up at approximately 1,000-step intervals along the route. When participants reach each station, their passport will be stamped. For each 1,000 steps completed, each participant gets a ticket for prize draws. The route is being designed so that those who don’t want to complete the full circuit can easily return to the starting point. Challenge organizers hope as many participants as possible will complete the full route, but even walking a few thousand steps is a good start to reaching a fitness goal.

“Since its formation the PPRA has been all about making recreation accessible to the residents of our part of Centretown, and this goal is certainly shared by our Challenge partners,” said Musgrove. “Walking is probably the easiest, cheapest and most accessible form of exercise. We are fortunate because Somerset West and Hintonburg are really great walking neighbourhoods with interesting businesses and buildings in every block. We think the best way to get to know and enjoy these areas is on foot.”

The Challenge promises to be a fun afternoon with music, hip hop dancing, a barbecue, and prize draws for participants. The PPRA hopes that the event will also lead to the establishment of permanent walking groups in both Dalhousie West and Hintonburg. Preregistration for the 10,000-Step Challenge opens in May.
